Bispebjerg Psychiatric Center for
Children and Youth
Originally designed by KHR architects in 1963, the building housing the Bispebjerg Psychiatric Center for Children and Youth has undergone a significant transformation to meet modern standards. At the start of the project, the facility was outdated and no longer suitable for the specialized care of children and adolescents with mental health disorders. The renovation focused on adapting the structure to create a safe, functional, and supportive environment for young patients.

Patient safety and functional design
The new extension was constructed within the existing courtyard to house office spaces. This location was carefully chosen to visually connect the two departments, allowing staff to maintain constant observation of patients. The integration of staff and patient areas enhances overall safety while supporting effective treatment.
The existing patient rooms were converted into private single rooms, each equipped with newly designed bathrooms and toilets. These spaces incorporate a range of anti-ligature measures to protect against self-harm, ensuring a secure and therapeutic setting for young patients.
