Psychiatric Center Ballerup
Nestled in a hilly, nature-rich area in the southwestern part of the hospital grounds in Ballerup, the new Psychiatric Center is designed to harness the positive effects of a sensory-rich, biophilic environment. Surrounded by tall, dominant vegetation, the project is deeply inspired by its natural surroundings. Efforts have been made to preserve the existing greenery as much as possible, integrating nature into the architectural design to create an optimal environment for treatment and healing.

Treatment-focused architecture
PC Ballerup’s architecture aims to provide secure, stimulating, and treatment-optimized spaces for patients and staff. Designed with simplicity and poetic intent, the facility employs robust materials such as brick, glass, and light, warm wood cladding. These elements come together to create a calming and supportive environment tailored to the needs of its users.
Future-proof design
The project is planned as a double-section facility, with 16 patient rooms in each section and an activity hall connecting them. In the first phase, a single section and the activity hall were constructed, with the design allowing for seamless expansion in a future second phase. This forward-thinking approach ensures adaptability and scalability to meet evolving needs.
Atmosphere and natural light
The architecture is closely aligned with the site’s natural features, emphasizing access to light, air, and nature. At the heart of the building lies a central courtyard—a defining element that serves as a sheltered outdoor space for patients. The courtyard not only enhances the connection to nature but also provides sightlines, spatial coherence, and a sense of calm throughout the facility.
Sensory experience
Material selection in the project is guided by both technical and aesthetic considerations, ensuring an environment that engages and soothes the senses. Building-integrated sound regulation is carefully designed to complement the visual elements, creating a harmonious sensory experience that supports healing and well-being.
