Holmsheidi Prison

Hólmsheidi Prison, located just outside Reykjavik, Iceland, opened in 2016 as a modern correctional facility designed to balance functionality, security, and harmony with its natural surroundings. APA played a key role in the project’s initial phase, providing planning and pre-design proposals in collaboration with the Icelandic Prison and Probation Service. This phase responded to a complex program developed by the Icelandic state. Subsequent phases of the project were led by Icelandic architects Arkís following a tender process.

Compact design for optimal flow

All prison functions are consolidated into a dense, compact building structure. This design encourages interaction between staff and inmates while ensuring efficient day-to-day operations. The layout also creates a foundation for maintaining an extremely high level of both static and dynamic security, ensuring the safety of all users.

Quality and security through design

The prison’s design reflects a commitment to quality and security. The repeating orientation of protruding cell windows ensures inmates have access to visually stimulating views, fostering mental well-being. At the same time, the layout prevents direct communication between inmates, preserving the facility's security and operational integrity.

Hólmsheidi Prison's architectural design is deeply inspired by its natural surroundings. The building’s core features a thoughtfully planned geometry that offers sweeping views of Iceland’s striking landscape, benefiting both inmates and staff. Situated on a flat plateau, the building’s four-legged structure seamlessly integrates with the undulating terrain, blending harmoniously into the environment.
